I selfproclaimed myself a Grinch this year’s holiday season for obvious reasons but I do secretely love Christmas, yes I do. It’s hard to hide from it anyways, Christmas tunes are playing everywhere and the decor lit up you face, literally.
Today I want to Christmas shop. I want to create a Christmas list just because I I haven’t made one since I was 12 years old.
The last Christmas I spent in Sweden before I moved to Chile was majestic for a 11 year old girl like myself. Being the first born, and only female on my mother’s side of the family brought so many priviledges and benefits so many times, Christmas being one of them. I received unlimited clothes, shoes, gym attire (I was a gymnast), a stereo, a cd-player (yes, a CD player…), a bunch of CD, one of my favorites being Alanis Morisette, Fugees, and No Doubt, and a bunch of girly beauty stuff that a 11 year old would love to receive. I remember that particular Christmas with all my senses because maybe I unconsciously sensed that it was going to be my last Christmas with my big numerous sterotypical hispanic family. And not only was it my last Christmas with my big loving family, it was the last materialistic Christmas I ever experienced.
When it was time to celebrate next Christmas in Chile, now 12 years young, a completely different reality hit my life. Kids in that country don’t necessarily get 1000 gifts and are happy with maybe one or two presents. It was eye opening to me to see that my life had been so different to most of the kids in my neighborhood but believe it or not, I felt like it was completely ok to adapt to that. I remember sending an unlimited Christmas list to my grandmother in Sweden that Christmas out of habit but immediately went on the biggest guiltrip because of the new reality that I was succumbed in.
From that year on, the number of Christmas gifts went decreasing fast, and I started to ask for practical gifts like school supplies or sports membership fees. And now as an adult when things are attainable all year around, my Christmas “list” is still very small. For example, last year I asked for a Michael Kors watch and a juicer; sweet, short, and simple.
This year, I’m going to try this “list” again, that I will probably end up getting after the actual holidays anyways since I am going to Chile in January. All in all, it’s fun to go e-window shopping. Here’s a few things that I can think of, and maybe it could even turn into Christmas present ideas for you!
